Mentorship on the Ward: How to Support New Colleagues
Being a mentor is not about having all the answers. It is about being available, listening and sharing experiences in a way that strengthens the new colleague.
Here are five principles for effective mentorship:
1. Be proactive – ask how things are going instead of waiting for them to ask
2. Normalize uncertainty – share your own early mistakes
3. Give specific feedback – not just "good job" but "I saw you handled that worried relative calmly"
4. Help with navigation – who do you talk to about schedules, salary, development?
5. Celebrate progress – small wins build confidence
